2020 has been a year of uncertainty and unexpected change. While the negative consequences of this crisis will likely affect us for the foreseeable future, our team and our clients have used this period as an opportunity to be creative and innovative. In fact, there has been an abundance of innovation globally.
Here are some of the main innovation highlights from 2020
The most anticipated Idea Drop roll-out this year
The challenges presented by the pandemic last year were met with a greater appetite for innovation. As a result, we onboarded many new clients across various verticals, including finance, mining, law and technology. We also continued to be the partner of choice for UK public sector organisations.
GAM Investments launched and rolled out Idea Drop quicker than planned in order to give their global team, who were now all working remotely, a tool to share their thoughts and ideas with the wider business.
We witnessed a commendable level of employee engagement with the newly launched innovation programme. During the first two weeks, 40% of all users submitted an idea and there were almost 2000 other interactions, with employees offering comments and ratings, and “favouriting” colleagues’ ideas.

Idea Drop's makeover for even better user experience
Change was an inevitable reality of 2020. Our clients needed new and better ways to capture solutions to the problems created by the pandemic.
We reacted quickly by making it faster and easier to submit ideas, and to find and manage the most impactful ones on the Idea Drop platform.
We moved our Innovation Bootcamp online
As the lockdowns got underway globally last year, we were among the many businesses that had to swiftly move our events online.
We partnered with PwC, BDO, Eversheds Sutherland, Chaucer, Hill+Knowlton Strategies and Amazon Web Services and replicated face-to-face experience as much as we could during our virtual workshops. The great thing about running these workshops virtually was that it enabled us to invite a global audience to learn about innovation management. As a result, we welcomed hundreds of participants from the UK, Germany, the United States, Canada and South Africa.
Number of new ideas, collaboration and "challenges" on the Idea Drop platform spiked in 2020
As everyone started to work remotely, our clients used Idea Drop more than ever before to address the challenges they were facing during the pandemic in 2020.
During the first month of lockdown, posting “challenges” increased by 56% across all our clients, and collaboration on ideas, through commenting, rating and favouriting, rose by 51%.
During the second lockdown, we saw another spike in ideas submitted on the platform. The number soared by 52%, undoubtedly showing that with the right tools and innovative mentality, our clients can unlock great opportunities for new growth, even during challenging times!
We were inspired by the innovations happening and accelerating during the crisis
The healthcare sector reacted commendably to the unprecedented pressures it faced in 2020. Gabi SmartCare for instance launched a remote device to help doctors and parents better monitor their children’s health at home. This solution has reinforced to us how critical it is to drive change with the application of new technologies.
Apple’s OS7 watch was developed during the pandemic and uses a combination of motion sensors, a microphone and machine learning to detect when the wearer is washing their hands. This story resonated with us as it shows that innovation can come from the smallest of improvements to a product, as long as it is fulfilling a customer need.
When the spread of COVID-19 threatened to overwhelm the healthcare system, car manufacturers GM and Ford transformed their manufacturing lines to produce a combined total of 80,000 ventilators in the US alone. The takeaway we gained from this is that sharing knowledge and resources across different industries is key to solving problems and finding solutions more rapidly.
Idea Drop powered BMS's innovative culture
Throughout 2020, global broker BMS utilised Idea Drop to give every employee an opportunity to share their ideas and play an active role in their innovation process. They understood that new ideas coming from different perspectives were needed to solve the unfamiliar challenges we all faced in 2020. We are delighted to share that, as a result, 6.2 out of every 10 ideas are now being executed!
Idea Drop clients shared their advice for supporting employees' mental wellbeing
While the social-distancing measures undoubtedly helped protect our physical health, maintaining our mental wellbeing was a huge challenge while many of us were (and still are) working from home in 2020.
We asked our clients how they were innovating to support their employees’ wellbeing through these unprecedented times. We were delighted with the ideas we received from a number of our clients, including GAM Investments, Taylor Vinters, Eversheds Sutherland, De Beers, Dorsey & Whitney and Partners Healthcare. Each company imparted great advice, from ensuring regular communication, establishing support groups and incorporating screen breaks into the daily work routine.
Here's a sneak peek into Idea Drop's big upcoming release - our Open Innovation feature
Last year highlighted that problems can be solved faster and better when businesses work together. In 2020, we created many opportunities for our clients to connect across different industries to share ideas and find great solutions to the problems they all faced.
We already know that great ideas that have the potential to change the world and that the ways in which businesses do things better can come from anyone, anywhere. The problem lies in finding these ideas. That’s why our team was busy last year building one of the biggest releases yet – our Open Innovation Challenge feature.
